Acetylcysteine 200 mg powder for oral use

Why is acetylcysteine used?

Acetylcysteine is used to treat paracetamol overdose (if you have taken too much paracetamol).

Before you are given acetylcysteine

Tell your doctor if you:

• Do you suffer from asthma or breathing difficulties?
• You have had an adverse reaction to acetylcysteine before
• pregnant or breastfeeding

Possible side effects

Tell your doctor or nurse immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms.

• Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
• Wheezing, difficulty breathing
• Feeling sick
• Irritation at the injection site
• skin rash and itching
• Glow (red face or feeling hot)
• Low blood pressure leading to dizziness

How will acetylcysteine be given?

Adults

You will be given a total dose of 300 mg of acetylcysteine per kilogram of your body weight, over a period of 21 hours.

How to store acetylcysteine

• Your doctor or nurse will make sure that the medication is stored and disposed of properly.
• Keep the medicine out of the reach and sight of children.
• Do not use acetylcysteine after the expiry date shown on the carton and on the ampoule label.
• Store below 25 degrees Celsius.
• Acetylcysteine must be diluted in a suitable liquid before use. Once opened, use immediately. Discard the ampoule after use.
• Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste.
